Leaving a conversation warmly

Ending a conversation kindly, so you leave on a good note and keep your energy.

Leaving is part of a good conversation

Everyone at an event expects conversations to end. Leaving at a high point is kinder than letting it fade, and it lets you both move on with a good impression.

You don't need an elaborate excuse. A warm, clear line is enough.

Signal, then go

Wait for a natural pause, say something appreciative about the conversation, and give a simple reason to move on. Then actually go.

  • Mention something specific you enjoyed.
  • Offer a light reason: a drink, someone to find, some air.
  • If you'd like to stay in touch, say so before you leave.

Lines to leave with

Honest, warm and short.

Say: It's been really good talking with you. I'm going to grab another drink, but I hope we cross paths again later.

Say: I've really enjoyed this. I promised myself I'd say hello to a few more people tonight, so I'll let you go.

Say: Thanks for this. I'd love to keep in touch. Are you on LinkedIn?

Say: I'm going to step outside for a bit of air. Lovely to meet you.

If you're cornered

If someone keeps talking, wait for them to take a breath, smile, and say your exit line anyway. Being clear is not rude. Introducing them to someone nearby is another graceful way out.
